Senior Scientist

Santa Barbara   |   Full time

C-Zero is looking for a Senior Scientist who will work with our interdisciplinary technical team to scale C-Zero’s high-temperature catalytic melt system for pilot and production applications. The Senior Scientist will be responsible for performing laboratory experiments, designing and modeling process units, and communicating results across the organization. The ideal candidate will have deep expertise in high temperature melt systems and a passion for hands-on work to drive to significant milestones on aggressive timelines.

What You’ll Do

  • Work closely with the engineering team to construct and operate experimental test stands for our catalytic melt system
  • Design and execute experiments to address key bottlenecks in the development process
  • Perform materials characterization using a range of standard analytical techniques as well as develop new ways to characterize novel materials
  • Generate technical reports and presentations for both internal and external communication
  • Assist in the development and design of pilot systems
  • Perform heat transfer, fluid dynamics, and chemical process modeling using industry software tools

What We’re Looking For

  • MS + 3-5 years industrial experience or PhD in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science and Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering, or a related field
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute chemical experiments for both scientific elucidation and performance optimization
  • Experience with software for performing heat transfer, structural mechanics, fluid dynamics, and chemical process modeling

  • Enjoys the fast paced, results driven environment of a startup
  • Ability to work well independently and as part of a small team
  • Desire to work in a fast-paced environment and able to prioritize work across multiple projects
  • Comfortable working in a chemical engineering laboratory
  • High attention to detail
  • Comfortable independently advancing experiments from conception through data analysis
  • Hands-on approach to engineering problem solving

About C-Zero

C-Zero is a hard-tech startup located in Santa Barbara, CA, that is developing a technology for decarbonizing natural gas. The company’s technology uses high temperature catalytic melt systems to break down methane, (the primary molecule in natural gas) into hydrogen and solid carbon. C-Zero’s hydrogen can be used to decarbonize a wide range of industries including ammonia production, gasoline and diesel fuel, electric generation, process heat, and fuel cell vehicles, and has the potential to address 75% of global CO2emissions.
